NGC 44 (00h 13.1m +31° 17') Discovered by JH (h10). There is a faint nonstellar object on GSC at JH's position (00 13 13.4 +31 17 11) which appears to be an extremely compact gx or an overlapping double star on the DSS (elongated WSW-ENE). Reinmuth describes "cF, eS, E, ident doubtful; BD +30d17 npp 6.6'; double star 16 and 12.5 nf 1.5', *14 sf 1.3'." Reinmuth's description appears to apply to this elongated image. NGC 218 (00h 41.8m +36° 21') Stephan's position (VIII) is an unusually poor match! He placed this object just 40" S of mag 8.9 SAO 54096 (his reference star). U00440 is located 45s further E and almost 2' S of Stephan's place. Visual observation of U00440 = M+06-02-013 = Z519-017 given here verified on the POSS. NGC 464 (01h 19.0m +34° 58') Discovered by Tempel (V) and placed at 01 19 33 +34 57.7 (2000). The RNGC identifies N464 with an extremely faint gx located 6' W of Tempel's position. According to Bigourdan who searched for N464, Tempel's entry may refer to a small asterism of four stars close NE. But just 1' W of the NGC position for N464 is a 9" double of 14th magnitude stars with a mean GSC position of 00 19 26.7 +34 57 20 (2000). Interestingly, my visual observing notes indicate that I thought the close faint double could possibly be a non-stellar object with my 17.5". Listed in RNGC Corrections #5. (R)N464 is not in CGCG, MCG, UGC. Uncertain ID. NGC 537 (01h 26.3m +34° 05') Discovered by WH (III 170) and described simple as "stellar". Dreyer questions if identical to N523 in the NGC description and equated in the RNGC. Apparently all the RA's are off in the sweep with respect to Beta And. Reinmuth describes "vF, S, R, bM, pB** n 3', BD +33° 230 f 3.0'." There is a mag 14.5 GSC star (verified stellar on DSS) at this position (01 26 36.1 +34 02 37). NGC 700 (01h 52.3m +36° 02') LdR described this gx as "about 8' sp same group [N703, 704, 705, 708]." This rough position is a much better match with Z522-030 than U01336 which is identified as N700 in RNGC and UGC. MCG lists M+06-05-024 = N700. Reinmuth suggests an apparent anonymuos gx: "identif doubtful; perhaps eeF vS neb sp 1.2' N704." |
